NFL Players Face Challenges with Returning to College

1 month ago 0

An ongoing debate surrounds the decision of NFL players granted an extra year of eligibility wishing to return to college football. The NFL recently issued a memorandum stating that players who leave NFL camps to play in college cannot return to the NFL that season or be drafted in future seasons.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter discussed the issue on “Get Up,” highlighting the unique mixing of collegiate and professional football levels requiring rule clarification. Schefter emphasized the longstanding rule that players cannot reenter the NFL draft after leaving for college. He illustrated that once a player is drafted, they have used their eligibility, referencing former safety Donte Whitner. A player, like Whitner, cannot be a high draft choice again after returning to college.

The issue gained prominence with Dae’Quan Wright’s decision to leave Cleveland Browns’ training camp and play for LSU under coach Lane Kiffin. Zxavian Harris follows suit, departing the New Orleans Saints to join LSU.

Schefter reiterated the definitive nature of the rules, stating that returning to college from the NFL poses restrictions on future draft eligibility. Although the rules are clear, the consequences players like Wright will encounter are uncertain. Schefter noted that people are curious about how Wright’s decision will impact his future prospects.
