The Nashville International Airport could soon bear the name of Dolly Parton, announced by the governor and airport officials. The iconic country singer and philanthropist from rural Tennessee passed away at 80 on Tuesday.
The decision to rename the airport in her honor aims to celebrate Dolly’s influential legacy throughout Tennessee and globally. This proposal will be discussed at the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s meeting on September 17.
Governor Bill Lee consulted with Parton’s team regarding the proposal, who expressed their gratitude. “Dolly Parton’s remarkable life is entwined with our state’s identity,” said Lee. “Her journey from East Tennessee’s rural mountains to international stages embodies the Volunteer Spirit. Naming Nashville International Airport after her would be a fitting tribute.”
The initiative to rename the airport has gained considerable support, evident from the petition started over a year ago. The petition reached 160,000 signatures by Friday night and received backing from a Nashville City Council member and a Tennessee state representative.
The “Queen of Country” passed away surrounded by family after battling cancer briefly. Her death resonated nationally and internationally, prompting tributes from fans, celebrities, and political figures. Dolly’s legacy extends beyond music. Her unique blonde hairstyles, Southern charm, and compassionate nature have made her beloved across generations.
Dolly was also known for her business acumen and charitable endeavors. She founded the Dollywood Foundation to aid property relief and education in East Tennessee. Her Imagination Library initiative mails free books to children worldwide.
