Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair has raised concerns about Europe’s potential vulnerability in a conflict with Russia if it loses the support of the United States. Blair emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with the U.S. during a conversation with Kayleigh McEnany on the “Saturday in America” show.
Blair highlighted the crucial nature of the U.S.-U.K. alliance. “If we get drawn into a conflict without the support of America, we don’t win,” he stated. He advised British leaders to support U.S. decisions, especially when they involve security matters that are integral to national safety. Blair remarked, “When your ally is an indispensable part of your security, it’s wise to assist them when they request help.”
“This is an essential relationship,” Blair noted, underlining the necessity of the alliance.
Blair, who led the U.K. from 1997 to 2007, described the U.S.-U.K. partnership as vital for the security of Western nations. The backdrop of this discussion is the ongoing debate across Europe regarding the threat posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin towards NATO member states. While Blair himself doubts Putin’s threat to countries outside Ukraine, he acknowledged that many in Europe view the situation differently.
The former Prime Minister stated, “I might be wrong [about Putin]. And there are a lot of people in Europe who think he’s got malicious intent towards NATO countries.” Concerns over Russia have been further amplified by recent incidents such as an explosives-laden drone found near a Ukrainian cargo plane in Germany. Other events like airspace violations and arson have also increased tensions, as reported by USA Today.
The comments from Blair coincide with ongoing efforts by the U.S. and European nations to bolster Ukraine’s defenses while avoiding full-scale intervention in the conflict with Russia.
