Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro appeared in photographs shared on his social media, marking his first known appearance since being held in a New York prison. He was captured and transferred to the United States in January after a significant military operation in Caracas. He has been at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn for eight months due to drug trafficking allegations.
The images, which Maduro posted on his X account, show him wearing a gray sweatsuit with white sneakers. He appears thinner and is seen standing against a plain backdrop. In a message to his family and supporters, he expressed hope and confidence, saying, “we will remain strong, serene, and confident” about Venezuela’s future.
Maduro expressed his sentiments through the caption, sending the photos as a “small gift” to his loved ones and the Venezuelan people. He shared gratitude for their support and described their love as transforming into prayers and solidarity, promising infinite thanks for their blessings.
Maduro’s wife, also involved in the drug trafficking charges, accompanied him to New York. The photos come days after former U.S. President Donald Trump revealed a deal with Venezuela granting the U.S. majority control of 65 billion barrels from Venezuela’s oil reserves. This deal could lower U.S. gas prices amid tensions with Iran affecting global oil prices.
The photos from Maduro’s account were taken on June 25, one day after tragic earthquakes in northern Venezuela. Maduro and his wife face trial in June 2027, both pleading not guilty. They risk life sentences if found guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine in the U.S.
According to El País, Maduro has spent much of his prison time engaging in Bible readings. His son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, stated that the former leader has 510 minutes per month to communicate with the outside world.
