Designer John Galliano and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City have announced that the planned exhibition celebrating Galliano’s work in conjunction with the 2027 Met Gala will not proceed following backlash.

The British designer shared his decision on social media, stating, “After much reflection and discussion, I’m saddened to decide that the exhibition won’t take place.” The Met confirmed the exhibition’s cancellation, citing Galliano’s controversial history.

Galliano’s past remarks have sparked controversy due to antisemitic and racist comments in 2010 and 2011, leading to his dismissal from Dior and a hate crime conviction in France. He expressed remorse, noting his accountability for the pain caused, especially to Jewish and Asian communities.

Chair of the Met Gala, Anna Wintour, praised Galliano’s decision as courageous, stating, “I believe this is the right decision, and it has my full support.” Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of The Met’s Costume Institute, emphasized the museum’s responsibility to address difficult histories with care.

Opposition to the exhibition grew, with donors threatening to withdraw support if the exhibit persisted, according to The New York Times. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin strongly opposed the exhibition, applauding the Met’s decision, noting it was painful for the Jewish community.

Galliano, known for his innovative designs, served as Dior’s creative director for 15 years. He helped establish Dior as a global fashion leader before his dismissal. In 2014, he joined Maison Margiela for a decade.

Lauren Sherman, a CBS News fashion contributor, remarked on Galliano’s contribution to fashion. She highlighted Wintour’s efforts to support Galliano’s return to the industry. Wintour appeared in the 2024 documentary “High & Low – John Galliano,” chronicling his career.

The Met indicated plans to announce new details on the upcoming exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala soon.
