1 month ago 0

Law enforcement reported that a woman was shot by New York City police in Times Square on Monday afternoon. She allegedly attacked multiple people while armed with knives. The incident occurred near West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue. Officers responded to a report of a person with a knife.

Authorities indicated the woman allegedly slashed at least two individuals before police intervened. Witness accounts describe the suspect holding two knives and ignoring officers’ commands to drop them.

New York City councilman Carl Wilson commented on the incident via social media, noting that it took place at 42nd and 7th. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is currently investigating. Foot traffic is restricted from 42nd to 43rd on 7th Avenue while this investigation is underway. No other perpetrators are sought.

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal delivered a similar statement on social media.

The conditions of those involved in the incident are not immediately known. Police stated that there is no evidence suggesting a terrorism link to this event. The NYPD promised further details imminently, while Newsweek contacted Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office for comments.

New York City Emergency Management alerted locals about expected delays due to the closure of 7th Avenue traffic in the heart of Times Square.

Monday’s attack occurred in a highly visited and policed part of New York City, frequented by hundreds of thousands daily. This attack follows other recent violent events in Times Square. Just last week, an MTA worker was stabbed in a nearby subway complex during a disagreement.

Public safety remains a priority for Midtown Manhattan officials and business groups, especially given the ongoing concerns since the pandemic. Although overall crime rates in the city have decreased, Times Square and Midtown continue to face issues like assaults, robberies, retail theft, and mental health crises, influenced by dense crowds, major transit hubs, and high tourist activity.

More information on this breaking news will follow as updates become available.
