Tony Romo has taken responsibility for his recent arrest on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Romo addressed the situation following his July arrest in Milwaukee, acknowledging an over-reliance on alcohol as a coping mechanism for chronic back pain.

Legal Consequences:

Online court records indicate that Romo’s driving license will be revoked for six months, and he must pay a fine of $784. Additionally, Romo is required to complete an Alcohol Assessment Program. He also needs to install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he owns.

Romo refused to take an intoxication test during the traffic stop, leading to his citation for operating while impaired (OWI). Police noted a strong odor of alcohol and found an open alcoholic beverage in his vehicle.

“This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense of OWI in Wisconsin,” Romo stated. “I own this completely.”

In his Instagram statement, Romo revealed his struggles with pain medication, which he used to manage pain after multiple back surgeries. His dependency on these medications gradually transitioned to alcohol use.

Romo shared, “Constant debilitating pain from surgeries led to a dependence on pain medication. My efforts to quit those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”

Personal Reflection:

Romo emphasized the importance of taking responsibility. His teachings to his three sons focused on standing up and recognizing personal shortcomings. He highlighted the need for honesty in addressing the past and making necessary changes for a better future.

Following his arrest, Romo experienced a challenging yet meaningful period. He stated, “The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant.”

His recovery involves working closely with a team of doctors to improve his health. Romo expressed gratitude for the support received from his family, friends, and the NFL community.

Romo’s Instagram post received nearly 17,000 likes, showing the public’s support. Among those expressing encouragement was Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady.
