Germany has accused Russia of attempting to sabotage Leipzig/Halle Airport with a failed drone operation. In response, Germany announced the closure of Russian diplomatic facilities, heightening tensions after linking Moscow to last month’s attack.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul declared that Russia’s consulate in Bonn will be shut down, and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin will have its contract terminated. German authorities assert Moscow’s involvement in the August 4 incident.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt revealed forensic and intelligence findings that connect Russia to the attack. A drone carrying an explosive was discovered alongside a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The device failed to explode due to a faulty detonator.
Germany suspects a second drone struck a nearby cargo aircraft, fitting what Dobrindt described as Russia’s established pattern of hybrid operations in Europe.
Russia denies these claims. The Russian Embassy in Berlin labeled the accusations “absurd,” and Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova mentioned Moscow would mirror Germany’s actions. Berlin’s moves were termed “an unprecedented escalation” in bilateral relations.
Wadephul also announced stricter entry requirements for Russian nationals and measures against Russia’s shadow fleet. Additionally, Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev, was summoned.
This marks Germany’s first public attribution of the attack to Russia, initially stating “foreign powers” could be involved. Previously, U.S. media reported American officials believed Russia’s involvement.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is significant for Europe’s cargo operations, serving as a logistics hub for Germany’s military and NATO allies, and housing Ukrainian transport aircraft crucial for supporting cargo operations.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte supported Germany’s findings, expressing solidarity via a social media post, acknowledging the evidence, and approving Germany’s response.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the EU would prepare further sanctions against Russia. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Moscow of regional escalation.
Germany faces increased hybrid threats targeting military, transportation, and infrastructure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned last week of consequences for those conducting hostile acts against Germany.
Separately, German police are investigating explosive and incendiary devices found at a power substation in Brandenburg following a power outage. Authorities have not identified the perpetrators.
