1 month ago 0

This fall in Chicago, dance enthusiasts face difficult choices between various enticing events. On September 17, attend the opening night of Joffrey Ballet’s “Liliom” at the Lyric Opera House or experience “Dancing with Bob” at the Harris Theater. Each event offers a unique exploration of dance and visual art.

The Revival of “Liliom”

Joffrey Ballet presents “Liliom,” a ballet by John Neumeier inspired by the French play that influenced the musical “Carousel.” Set in a Depression-era amusement park, Neumeier brings a sardonic twist to this classic story. Performances run September 17-27 at the Lyric Opera House.

Dancing with Bob

At Harris Theater, Trisha Brown’s troupe will perform in “Dancing with Bob,” showcasing collaborations with visual artist Bob Rauschenberg. The performance includes Trisha Brown’s 1983 “Set and Reset” and Merce Cunningham’s 1977 “Travelogue.” This offers a rare glimpse into historic postmodern dance.

An Eventful Dance Season at Driehaus Museum

Brendan Fernandes continues as artist-in-residence at the Driehaus Museum, presenting “In the Round,” a mix of dance and visual arts. The event, inspired by New York’s Judson Dance Theater, features open rehearsals and performances from September 16 to November 14.
