Tuesday marked a joyful return at Scott Elementary School in Naperville. Music blared from a portable speaker, and both staff and students waved pom poms and blew noisemakers. Balloons fluttered under a sign welcoming back head custodian Dean Baki, who was crowned as “The king is back.”
After six months away due to medical leave, Baki received hugs and high fives from eager students glad to see him again. Known affectionately as Mr. Dean, he resumed work after surviving a severe medical crisis last February.
The morning’s festivities, organized in part by Principal Tracey Ratner, aimed to show gratitude for Baki’s contribution to the school community. “We wanted to make sure it was special and he felt welcomed,” she said.
It’s important that he knows how much he means to all of us.
Baki’s ordeal began in February when he felt unwell and drove himself to Edward Hospital, collapsing upon arrival. With arteries almost fully clogged, his survival odds were slim. Months of hospital care and rehabilitation followed, which Baki dubbed miraculous.
Now 68, Baki expressed deep connection to Scott Elementary, dismissing retirement thoughts. “This is my home,” he said, speaking fondly of the teachers and students he regarded as amazing.
Baki’s recovery saw constant support from the school community. Principal Ratner noted regular contact with him during the absence, including students making cards and blankets. “He really is the heart of our school,” Ratner said.
As a veteran, Baki also plays a notable role in the school’s Veterans Day assembly.
He’s very encouraging when he sees kids in the hallway having a hard time.
The end-of-year assembly in May welcomed Baki as a special guest, with children chanting his name and applauding. “We are complete again,” said Heidi Ruppenthal, a paraprofessional.
Students shared their sentiments openly. Fourth-grader Jeffery Chiros expressed happiness at Mr. Dean’s return, praising his kindness and humor. Peyton Stelzer called him a mentor, and Daniel Beil emphasized his importance to the school’s stability.
