A mother in Arizona shared a heart-wrenching story of her young daughter’s unexpected death after being assured her toddler was fine. Eight months after Olive Tenney endured a febrile seizure, she unexpectedly passed away. Her mother, Aubrey Tenney, 32, described Olive as a child who embraced life fully. Known to her family as Ollie, she loved water, trusted strangers as friends, and carried a lively spirit.
Aubrey recalled Olive as a joyful child. Olive was easy-going as a baby, and as she grew, her vibrant personality became apparent. On November 1, 2023, everything changed when Olive died at 18-and-a-half months old. The autopsy returned inconclusive results, leaving the family without answers. Aubrey, who also has a son, Tanner, age 6, and 1-year-old twins Wes and Mae with husband David, recalled two alarming episodes before Olive’s death.
Firstly, on July 4, while in California, Olive, after resting in her aunt’s arms, turned blue around her lips. Quick action, including pouring water on her and patting her back, revived Olive. The next day, a visit to urgent care suggested that dehydration might have been to blame, a belief supported by their pediatrician who mentioned a potential febrile seizure.
On September 2, Olive had another worrying episode. Following a family meal, Aubrey noticed Olive seizing in her car seat. They rushed Olive to the hospital, where doctors found a mild fever. Conversations with their pediatrician led to a decision against extensive neurological testing, opting instead for vigilant monitoring.
The night of November 1 brought devastating news. David called Aubrey during her volleyball coaching to say that Olive wasn’t breathing. Despite his immediate efforts and those of first responders, Olive could not be revived. Aubrey remembers hoping for a miracle on her way to the hospital, only to face the heart-wrenching reality that Olive was gone.
With time, the Tenney family learned about Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC), a condition where a child’s unexpected death remains unexplained despite thorough investigations. Research, including a January 2024 study by NYU Grossman School of Medicine published in Neurology, suggests a possible connection between SUDC and febrile seizures, although complications are not guaranteed for every child experiencing them.
Nowadays, Aubrey uses TikTok (@aubreytenney) to share Olive’s story to raise awareness. She emphasizes that the goal is not to create fear but to inform others. In remembrance of Olive’s life, the family continues to celebrate her birthday by eating edamame, wearing olive green, and recalling the light Olive brought into their lives. Aubrey explained that Olive is ever-present in their lives, marked by olive trees around them, olive-themed decor, and her name spoken often among her siblings.
