Stephen A. Smith Warns Far-Left Influencer Could Harm Democrats

4 weeks ago 0

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith expressed concern on Thursday about the potential political impact of far-left streamer Hasan Piker. During an interview with POLITICO host Dasha Burns, Smith argued that Piker’s influence might pose a risk to Democrats, particularly beyond their progressive base, and provide Republicans with resources to challenge candidates aligning with him.

Smith highlighted his belief that Piker’s growing political presence could negatively affect Democrats. “It’s going to contaminate the electorate on the left side,” Smith stated. He predicted that it would eventually have adverse effects on the party.

Haley Baldassarre, national press secretary for the Republican National Committee (RNC), commented on Piker’s connection with Democratic candidates. She criticized Democrats for not addressing Piker’s influence, particularly as Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed faced scrutiny for campaigning alongside him.

“El-Sayed is a terrorist sympathizer and an America-hating socialist,” Baldassarre claimed.

She also suggested that El-Sayed’s reluctance to disassociate with Piker reinforced his allegiance to extremist ideologies, urging Democrats to either reject Piker’s views or confront them directly.

Piker’s involvement in Democratic politics has become a contentious issue during Michigan’s crucial Senate race. A Fox News poll revealed Republican nominee Mike Rogers leading El-Sayed 51%-47%, but El-Sayed’s support varied significantly among different voter groups.

While most Democratic Socialists of America supporters backed El-Sayed, his support among other Democrats and independents diminished.

El-Sayed explained his rationale for engaging with Piker’s audience. He emphasized the importance of integrating them into the electoral process rather than standing aside.

“Three million people listen to Hasan,” El-Sayed said. “I want to offer them a pathway into an electoral movement.”

According to Smith, El-Sayed’s strategy revolves around appealing to Piker’s followers instead of endorsing the streamer himself.

“You’re not thinking about him. You’re thinking about the three million people that support him,” Smith stated.

Smith warned that Republicans could leverage Piker’s rhetoric and associations with Democrats as political ammunition. El-Sayed confirmed Smith’s interpretation of his strategy.

In light of backlash over some of Piker’s comments, El-Sayed attempted to create distance between his campaign and the streamer. Despite this, Piker endorsed El-Sayed and participated in various campaign events.

Piker has faced controversies due to past political remarks, including a retracted statement about 9/11 and recent comments on Israel and American Jews.

Fox News Digital reached out to Piker, the DNC, and the RNC for comment, but there was no immediate reply.
