Authorities have released the names of the victims from the recent shooting at a Minneapolis apartment. This incident resulted in two civilian deaths and left two police officers wounded.
Identities of the Victims
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) identified the civilians as Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Both were residents of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
Details of the Incident
The shooter, Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, was killed in a gunfire exchange with police. A preliminary autopsy ruled his death a homicide, indicating multiple gunshot wounds.
Officer Involvement
Two police officers were injured: Joseph Michnowski, with five years of service, and Yahye Ahmed, a nearly two-year veteran. Ahmed has been discharged from the hospital, while Michnowski remains hospitalized.
An MPD public information officer, Garrett Parten, clarified the nature of the officers’ injuries. One officer sustained a non-life-threatening leg injury, while the other required surgery for a separate wound. Another officer, Ernest Boateng, suffered glass cuts unrelated to gunfire while accessing a locked police vehicle.
Shooter’s Background
Johnson was reportedly facing eviction from the apartment. The shooting began during a contentious child custody exchange involving a woman formerly associated with him, as stated by Drew Evans, BCA superintendent. Johnson allegedly shot the woman outside, injured a facility worker inside, and then attacked two residents who later died.
Ongoing Investigation
The BCA reported that officer Liban Mohamed Ibrahim discharged his weapon during the incident. Investigations continue to determine if additional officers fired.
