Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, faces a serious legal battle. He has been indicted on two counts of murder related to the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home in California.
On Wednesday, prosecutors announced that a Los Angeles County grand jury had returned an indictment including new ‘special circumstance’ allegations. These allege that Nick Reiner, 32, carried out two murders ‘by means of lying in wait.’ This is classified as a special circumstance under California law, which could impact the severity of the punishment if he is convicted.
Additional allegations against Reiner include multiple murders and the use of a knife during the killings. The Los Angeles Public Defender’s office provided no further comments on Wednesday when contacted by Newsweek.
In Reiner’s case, prosecutors argue both multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. They describe this as involving deliberate concealment or a surprise attack.
According to Los Angeles County officials, the lying-in-wait allegation adds weight to the charges. Potential consequences, if Reiner is convicted, range from life imprisonment without parole to the death penalty. The decision to pursue capital punishment is still under consideration.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated that the indictment highlights the use of ‘lying in wait.’ He described the case as a ‘profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.’
