Michael Lombardi has stepped down from his role as General Manager of the University of North Carolina’s football program. The university confirmed his resignation on Thursday, following an internal investigation initiated more than a month ago.
Lombardi, who had been on paid administrative leave, decided to resign while the investigation by UNC’s Office of University Counsel continues. The nature of the allegations remains unspecified, and confidentiality concerns prevent further comment from the university.
Lombardi joined the program in 2025, prior to Bill Belichick’s first season, earning a reputation as one of the seven-time Super Bowl-winning coach’s trusted advisors. His annual salary of $1.5 million made him college football’s highest-paid operations executive.
“Effective September 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position,” UNC announced in a press release, indicating the investigation will proceed to determine corrective actions.
The investigation was made public in late July, with UNC citing unspecified allegations at the time. Bill Belichick, UNC’s head coach, mentioned the matter as they opened preseason camp, stating that the program is “working through some things,” and adjusting as necessary.
Lombardi and Belichick were seen at several games throughout the 2025 season, which concluded with a record of 4-8, and recently marked a promising start to the new season with an upset win against TCU in Ireland.
Despite Lombardi’s resignation, UNC remains committed to addressing any findings that emerge from the ongoing investigation.
