The U.S. military provided a rare glimpse into its southern border operations, revealing significant use of counter-drone technology. In August, the military took down around 100 suspected cartel drones, as confirmed by a senior War Department official.
Counter-Drone Operations
This marks the first time the Pentagon has disclosed the extensive use of advanced counter-drone systems, including sophisticated laser equipment, at the southern border. These technologies are employed to prevent suspected cartel drones from crossing into the U.S.
Task Force–Southern Border executed these drone takedowns, utilizing specialized equipment provided by various military units. Each operation was thoroughly planned and coordinated with Mexican military and border authorities to avoid any conflicts.
Broader Defense Strategy
The operations form part of a larger initiative to rapidly deploy drone defenses. This involves multiple technologies and trained personnel, with updated military authorities guiding the operations. The military is combining various systems rather than depending on one single solution.
Official Statements
Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson confirmed the use of defensive counter-drone technology to support border security operations. “The United States is using defensive counter-drone technology to protect personnel and border security operations from cartel-linked drone threats,” Wilson explained.
He also emphasized that actions are carefully coordinated with Mexican authorities to ensure safe operations without unintended conflicts on either side of the border.
Military Deployment at the Border
The military operations align with efforts from the Trump administration to use military force against cartels across the Western Hemisphere. This includes lethal strikes targeting alleged drug traffickers. Administration officials highlighted President Donald Trump’s directive for a strategy utilizing military force to protect the homeland from cartel threats.
An official remarked on the effectiveness of these measures, noting a significant decrease in U.S. casualties due to cartel activities. These efforts mark the largest reduction in such incidents in U.S. history.
