Initiating statin medication shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may offer significant health advantages beyond heart protection. Research revealed potential links to reduced dementia risks.
At the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich, findings indicated that those who started statins within a year of their diabetes diagnosis had a 15% lower risk of developing dementia over the next decade. Those who started between one and five years later experienced a 10% reduction.
A statin is a prescribed drug aimed at lowering LDL cholesterol, known for reducing heart attack and stroke risks. The detailed study monitored health data from 132,585 Danish patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes from 2006 to 2019, none of whom previously used statins or had dementia.
Over a median period of 7.1 years, research assessed how the timing of statin therapy impacted dementia rates. Dr. Liron Sinvani from the Northwell Institute for Healthy Aging emphasized the study’s significance in supporting the idea that statins might safeguard brain health.
Furthermore, it’s important to note that diabetes heightens risks for cognitive decline and heart disease. Experts found initiating statins within the first year reduced dementia risks by 15%, while delayed starts offered a 10% benefit.
Dr. Sinvani advocates earlier statin therapy consideration in diabetes care, citing the advantages of lower vascular dementia risks rather than Alzheimer’s.
The report suggested statins be part of a broader health regimen. Regular exercise, nutritious diets, and social connections should complement treatment strategies.
While the observational nature of the study limits definitive causal claims, the association between statins and dementia reduction is robust, according to the researchers.
Statin therapy may contribute to the prevention or delay of nearly half of dementia cases by addressing modifiable risk factors.
Dr. Sinvani pointed out limitations, stressing that the findings don’t prove statins prevent dementia, but highlight a promising research direction. Patients with type 2 diabetes are advised to consult healthcare providers regarding potential statin use.
