Caitlin Clark made her senior international debut with Team USA at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup against China. Fans had to wait as she was not part of Kara Lawson’s starting lineup. The starting guards were Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young, alongside Breanna Stewart, Kahleah Copper, and Napheesa Collier. Gray was instrumental in the 2022 World Cup victory, while Young, a top WNBA guard, was new to the squad.
Clark joined the game midway through the first quarter when Team USA had an early lead. Young contributed seven points to their first 20. Clark ended the first quarter with a two-point layup, four assists, and a rebound.
Before the tournament, Lawson praised Clark’s skills and coachability, noting her competitive nature and high-level game understanding. Clark entered the tournament on a hot streak, having set several WNBA records in August.
Clark averaged a record-setting 44.7 points per game, through scoring or assists. She became the first WNBA player to have consecutive games with over 30 points and 10 assists. This achievement included a 34-point, 12-assist performance against the Connecticut Sun and a 37-point, 10-assist game against the Chicago Sky.
Over five games in August, Clark achieved at least 20 points and 10 assists in each, a feat unmatched in the last five seasons. Her 24.4 points per game set a new monthly high for a WNBA point guard.
To start the World Cup, Lawson opted for experienced players, but Clark’s impressive performance might earn her a starting position later. Other key players joining off the bench included Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
