Why Homeowners with Low Interest Rates Are Paying Off Mortgages Faster

4 weeks ago 0

Homeowners with low-interest rate mortgages are opting to pay off their loans faster than required. This trend puzzles financial experts because such individuals would typically benefit more by extending their mortgage terms.

The sensible financial strategy involves holding onto low-interest-rate loans as long as possible. Financial planner Christopher Price emphasizes this point, stating, “Financially speaking, if I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can.”

Despite this advice, data from Rocket Mortgage reveals that almost 25% of homeowners are accelerating their mortgage payments. The lender reviewed early payments on nearly 3 million loans across all 50 states over the last five years.

Such individuals might be motivated by personal financial goals or a desire for greater financial security. While accelerating payments lowers debt faster, the strategy contrasts the typical advice given by experts, especially if the loan interest is low.
