Texas Christian University (TCU) has reversed its decision and restored press credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Last week, the university withdrew these credentials just before the Horned Frogs began their season. The season opener took place in Dublin, Ireland, against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Due to the revoked credentials, Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson covered the game from the stands.
The withdrawal of the credentials stemmed from a report about a locker room incident involving the dismissal of senior safety Jacob Fields. Fields has since been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident.
Ironically, TCU’s home games are played at Amon G. Carter Stadium, named after the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s founder and publisher. The school’s decision to reinstate the paper’s credentials followed productive discussions. In a statement, the TCU Athletics department said, “Today, TCU Athletics fully restored media credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. We respect their role as an independent news source and voice in our community, and we look forward to the season ahead.”
Despite the reconciliation, TCU faced a 15-10 loss against UNC in Ireland. The Horned Frogs will return to action on September 12 to host the Grambling State Tigers.
