President Donald Trump has renamed Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ amidst increasing trade tensions with Canada. He claims Canada has been exploiting the United States in trade matters. This symbolic renaming was reported by senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy.
The White House further fueled this rebranding theme by sharing an image from Trump’s Truth Social account. The image showed New Mexico’s name crossed out and replaced with ‘America,’ effectively calling it ‘New America.’ This post was spread through the White House’s verified X account, yet it lacked any explanation or indication of actual policy aspirations.
Trump signed an executive order for the name change of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America.’ This move came after a series of tariff disputes with Canada. Trump directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System to reflect the change. In response, Google and Apple updated their maps for U.S. users.
A poll revealed that the majority of Americans disapproved of renaming Lake Ontario. Despite these actions, Trump cannot unilaterally rename a U.S. state. The historical name ‘New Mexico’ has been in use since the Spanish explorers in the late 1500s. It became part of the United States in 1848 and was granted statehood on January 6, 1912.
While the White House shared these symbolic gestures, they have not formally announced efforts to alter New Mexico’s name. The Office of New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham did not offer immediate comments on this matter.
