In Temascalcingo, Mexico, a tragic event unfolded during a festival celebrating a patron saint. Pyrotechnic material exploded, resulting in the collapse of a wall, killing at least 10 people and injuring 64 others, as reported by Mexican authorities.

The explosion occurred on Saturday night adjacent to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church. This municipality in central Mexico has a population of 66,000. Hundreds were gathered to witness a fireworks display as part of the religious festivities when the blast happened. Temascalcingo lies roughly 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.

During the festival honoring the Virgin of the Light, the explosion left the community in mourning and prayer. The event took place in Santa Maria Canchesda within Temascalcingo municipality on September 6. A photograph captured by Luis Cortes from Reuters provides a glimpse into the aftermath.

The cause of the explosion is currently unknown. The Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation. Notably, two priests were among those injured, according to a local bishop. A video circulated on social media depicts the aftermath, with people navigating through smoke and debris, searching for survivors.

Pyrotechnic-related explosions have become common in Mexico, where fireworks are a staple in street and religious celebrations. For instance, nearly four years ago, a significant fireworks explosion in the village of Huejutla, located in the central state of Hidalgo, resulted in 17 injuries.
