A cargo plane operated by Amazon crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday, leading to an emergency response. The incident involved Prime Air Flight 7598, which overran the runway while landing after departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported the crash occurred at approximately 2 p.m. ET. The plane was a Boeing 767, and video on social media captured it off the runway with thick black smoke emanating from the aircraft.
Local fire officials indicated there were multiple patients as a result of the crash. However, it remains unclear if there were any fatalities. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that they were actively managing the scene, with over 60 units responding to extinguish the fire.
All runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport were closed by 3 p.m., according to the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. The FAA issued a ground stop initially lasting until 3 p.m., later extending to 5:30 p.m., to allow first responders to assess the situation.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the potential for significant delays and cancellations due to the ground stop. At the time of the incident, 21 Air, a contract cargo carrier, was operating the plane on behalf of Amazon.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel shared via social media that the company is closely collaborating with local authorities to determine the facts of the crash. According to Nantel, the priority remains the safety and care of all those affected.
