Deaths at Burning Man
Two men died within about 24 hours at the Burning Man festival, which gathers tens of thousands in Nevada’s desert for its final days. One of the deceased, Craigh Mann, aged 60, was found dead by his campmates Saturday afternoon. Another participant, in his mid-50s, passed away following a medical emergency the previous day.
Details of the Incidents
Mann was discovered at his camp in Black Rock City around 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 5. Burning Man Project organizers expressed their sadness over Mann’s death in a statement, conveying condolences to his family, friends, and campmates.
The first death was announced Friday evening. The man in his mid-50s suffered a medical crisis and received lifesaving measures before being taken to the festival’s onsite emergency care center, where he was pronounced dead. Details about the nature of the medical emergency were not disclosed, and his name has yet to be released pending family notification.
Community Support
Organizers emphasized that community and staff safety remains their priority. Round-the-clock support resources were made available to attendees in Black Rock City, a temporary city erected annually for the festival.
Festival Overview
The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office has yet to comment on the situation. The annual Burning Man event started on August 30 and planned to wrap up Monday. Attracting up to 80,000 “burners,” the festival is renowned for the ceremonial burning of a sizable wooden effigy.
