In Chaska, Minnesota, Haeran Ryu achieved a remarkable victory at the Women’s PGA Championship, securing her first major title by defeating Ina Yoon by two strokes. The event took place on a windy Sunday at Hazeltine National Golf Club, where Ryu shot a 2-under 70 to complete the tournament at 13-under 275.
Ryu’s accomplishment marked her as the sixth South Korean to win the championship within the past 12 years. Despite starting the championship with a 73, placing her as low as 70th, Ryu rallied to overcome an initial deficit of more than 10 shots—a feat not achieved by any major champion in at least 60 years.
“You don’t have another problem so just trust your shot and trust your caddie and trust yourself on the golf course,” Ryu shared during the trophy ceremony.
The intense weather involved a thunderstorm that delayed tee times by three and a half hours, ultimately softening the greens and creating gusty conditions. Ryu remained composed through these challenges, demonstrating impressive ball-striking skills and securing a decisive lead in the concluding 12 holes of the championship.
Brooke Henderson and Dewi Weber both tied for third place at 10 under, while Americans Allisen Corpuz, Auston Kim, and Alison Lee shared fifth place, finishing six strokes behind Ryu. LPGA leader Nelly Korda ended in a four-way tie for eighth, with multiple putting challenges hindering her performance.
On the other hand, Ina Yoon attained her best finish on the LPGA Tour, recovering gracefully from earlier setbacks. Although faced with disappointment from a 75 on Saturday and a double bogey on Sunday, she maintained composure under pressure.
Overall, Ryu’s exceptional performance demonstrated her adaptability and fortitude, propelling her to a notable victory despite initial setbacks. As for Korda, her focus remains on upcoming major tournaments, aiming to enhance her achievements despite recent difficulties.
