Chris Rock offered insights into the complexity of Hollywood during an interview with Variety. He described Los Angeles as having a hidden “underbelly” that many ignore. Rock mentioned that the city’s allure contrasts with its darker side.
The comedian, at 61, reflected on how aspirations in Hollywood have shifted. “Fame’s a complicated thing,” he remarked. Rock observed that many people now seek fame over excellence in fields like singing or acting. “I’ve seen the switch in my lifetime,” he added.
While acknowledging the city’s beauty and favorable climate, Rock pointed out its darker aspects. “You’re always gonna be outed if you don’t have the goods,” he said. He emphasized that Los Angeles is “the mecca” of unchecked ambition and pretense.

Rock balances his time between New York and Los Angeles, appreciating different parts of the latter. He humorously mentioned that he “winters” in California, highlighting his affection for the West Coast city.
Currently, Rock is directing an indie film titled Misty Green. The film explores the life of a struggling actress in Los Angeles, addressing the city’s contrasting priorities. Rock described a scene where lavish real estate coexists with visible homelessness, showcasing the stark contrasts present in Los Angeles.
Chris Rock and the Oscars Incident
The comedian also spoke about the 2022 Oscars, where Will Smith slapped him on stage. During the event, Smith reacted to a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Reflecting on the incident, Rock said, “I wish nothing would have happened.” He downplayed the incident’s significance compared to broader societal issues.
Rock stated that he wouldn’t attend the Oscars again unless he received a nomination. “The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated, and I’m not getting nominated,” he explained.
