The College Football Playoff (CFP) may soon expand to a 24-team format. On Tuesday, the CFP announced a 30-day negotiating window with ESPN. This marks significant interest in expanding the playoffs, potentially starting in 2027, according to ESPN’s Heather Dinich.
While the announcement doesn’t guarantee expansion beyond the current 12 teams, it indicates the Big Ten and SEC are considering discussions with ESPN. These discussions aim to assess the value of a 24-team playoff format.
The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential Playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN. This does not represent a decision or commitment to expand, but rather an opportunity to engage with ESPN and gather additional information to help determine a path forward.
According to Dinich, removing conference championship games is a possibility. This change depends on whether the expanded playoff provides sufficient media value, estimated at least $200 million, along with additional revenue from tickets and sponsorships.
Fans might see a shift away from conference championships. These games have been around for decades but do not significantly affect playoff selections. For example, Alabama played the Georgia Bulldogs last season and suffered a loss, but their playoff hopes remained unaffected since losses in these games are overlooked by the committee.
While entertaining, conference championships are akin to exhibitions due to their minimal impact on national title aspirations. The CFP is working towards replacing them with playoff games that matter. More details on the future playoff structure will emerge as negotiations proceed within the next 30 days.
