The New England Patriots nearly secured an upset over the Seattle Seahawks, but ultimately faced a 13-10 defeat in the NFL season’s opening clash.
Drake Maye spearheaded a promising drive in the fourth quarter, aiming for a victory with a touchdown or potential tie via a field goal. Yet, his attempt at a late-game end zone pass was intercepted, sealing the Patriots’ fate.
“I lost patience, and it cost us. Decisive mistakes on my part contributed to the game’s outcome … It’s a long season, but such errors are unacceptable. I need to refocus, because that performance isn’t representative of my play,” Maye reflected.
With only 21 seconds left, Maye’s interception occurred as he aimed for his teammate in the end zone’s corner. The Seahawks’ Josh Jobe intercepted the pass, securing Seattle’s victory.
Maye, over the course of the game, successfully completed 23 out of 33 passes, achieving 178 yards and a touchdown to his rookie teammate Eli Raridon. However, he also suffered three interceptions due to the Seahawks’ formidable defense.
The Patriots had a strong chance of winning, especially after Seahawks’ quarterback Sam Darnold was sidelined in the first quarter. Darnold exited the field with a limp, and Drew Lock stepped in as his replacement.
While initial reports suggest Darnold’s injury isn’t severe, a definitive return timeline remains undisclosed.
Maye and the Patriots must regroup following their disappointing start, as they prepare to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 20. The upcoming AFC match will showcase Maye alongside Aaron Rodgers.
