For the first time in four years, Venus and Serena Williams returned to the US Open court on Friday night in Queens. The legendary sisters originally planned to reunite earlier this summer at Wimbledon. Unfortunately, Serena, at 44, had to withdraw due to an injury during her comeback period.
Both walked onto the Arthur Ashe Stadium court to loud cheers from the crowd. Serena’s jacket highlighted her US Open victories, including the doubles titles they won together in 1999 and 2009. Facing them were Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Australian Maya Joint. Notably, Joint, at 20, was just a toddler when the Williams sisters claimed the 2009 US Open victory.
The opening set was highly competitive and ended with Chan and Joint winning 6-3. The Williams sisters bounced back in the second set, which culminated in a seven-point tie-breaker. Despite multiple chances to close the set, Venus and Serena eventually secured the win, extending the match.
The audience clearly supported the sisters, celebrating each point they scored. In their fourth event together, Chan and Joint presented a strong challenge, pushing the match into a deciding tie-breaker in the final set.
The tense final set saw Venus and Serena initially surge ahead, scoring the first five points in succession. Chan and Joint regrouped, countered with three consecutive points, and eventually clinched the match. The thrilling three-set duel concluded after slightly over three hours of play with a final score of 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(10).
Despite the loss, the Williams sisters demonstrated their enduring prominence in tennis. Their comeback was a testament to their remarkable skill and influence in the sport.
