The Los Angeles Rams touched down in Australia just one day prior to their Week 1 international face-off against the San Francisco 49ers. In contrast, the 49ers arrived in Melbourne a week early to adjust to the significant time difference.
San Francisco showcased a far more polished performance on Thursday night, securing a decisive 27-7 victory. The Rams, led by reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, appeared much less formidable than the top-rated offense they were in 2025.
The Rams’ last-minute travel arrangement attracted criticism from the NFL community and the dissatisfaction continued following the game. On Friday morning’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith criticized the Rams, describing the timing of their arrival as a “mistake.” He remarked, “You got there 28 hours before the game. Clearly, that appeared to be a mistake.”
Quarterback Brock Purdy led the 49ers to their opening win with 205 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Matthew Stafford’s performance lagged with 155 yards and one interception.
With the aim of recovery, the Rams will prepare for their next game against the New York Giants on Monday.
