Junior running back Aiden Brunner patiently awaited his moment to shine for the Jacobs Golden Eagles. Under coach Brian Zimmerman’s leadership, the team is renowned for its strong running game, making it challenging for players to secure a starting position, particularly in a leading role. Brunner expressed his understanding of the situation, noting, “I knew coming in I wasn’t going to play right away. I needed to wait and develop. Now, it’s my chance.”
On Friday night, Brunner seized that opportunity, leading one of the region’s most remarkable comebacks. He scored two decisive touchdowns in the second half, including the game-winning score with only 1.8 seconds remaining, helping Jacobs overcome a 17-point deficit to claim a 31-27 victory against Burlington Central in the Fox Valley Conference.
Brunner finished with 38 rushing yards on 11 carries, including touchdowns from 1 and 8 yards out. Quarterback Austin Stennett significantly contributed to the comeback, completing 19 of 31 passes for 263 yards and a 74-yard touchdown pass to Owen Crouch, who had five receptions for 111 yards. Chris Williams also played a key role, with seven catches for 59 yards and an 8-yard touchdown on a reverse play. Jordan Hudson added five catches for 75 yards.
For Burlington Central, Reece Beemer completed 14 of 30 passes for 112 yards and delivered a 10-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, giving the Rockets a temporary 27-24 lead. Parker Auxier recorded an impressive 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Despite struggling with their running game earlier in the season, Jacobs capitalized on Stennett’s growth as quarterback. Coach Zimmerman expressed his satisfaction with Brunner’s performance in the latter half, stating, “He’s a guy that’s been waiting in the wings. We told him it was his turn to take the reins. Although we haven’t been satisfied with our ground game, Austin has made significant plays.”
After Burlington Central gained a 27-24 lead with 1:06 left following a 68-yard drive, Jacobs rallied once more. Stennett orchestrated a drive, positioning the Golden Eagles for a successful scoring attempt. Brunner delivered the decisive touchdown, reflecting on the moment, “We knew we had the power on them and decided to run it down their throat. The line opened the gap, and it was amazing.”
Trailing 20-3 after Beemer’s touchdown pass to Chace Chesney in the third quarter, Stennett responded with a 74-yard TD pass to Crouch, igniting the comeback. Jacobs then marched 71 yards in five plays after a defensive stop, ending with Brunner’s 8-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 20-17.
Following a defensive three-and-out stop, Williams scored an 8-yard touchdown, propelling Jacobs ahead 24-20. Although Burlington regained the lead, Burlington’s coach Brian Iossi regretted missed scoring opportunities in the red zone, commenting, “Losing three times inside the 20-yard line in the second quarter was critical. Despite that, I’m proud of their effort.”
This thrilling game will be remembered as one of the season’s finest. Before the game, the coaches inspired the team, with Brunner recalling them saying, “This is a game you’re going to remember for the rest of your lives.” His prediction held true as Brunner stated, “I’ve never been a part of something like that.”
