Damage to U.S. Navy Base in Bahrain

The U.S. Navy base in Bahrain sustained significant damage due to Iranian strikes. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao publicly acknowledged the extent of the damage, highlighting its impact on the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters. While the Pentagon initially minimized the impact, satellite images and service members’ accounts confirmed extensive damage to key facilities.

Details of the Iranian Attack

On February 28, following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran retaliated with an attack on Bahrain, targeting the Juffair district where the Navy’s Fifth Fleet is based. Official recognition of the damage by the U.S. came through Cao’s remarks, providing a clearer picture of the situation.

“They blew the hell out of Bahrain,” Cao told The Epoch Times, acknowledging the attack’s severity.

Challenges in Resuming Full Operations

Restoring full operational capacity in Bahrain will take time. Retired Vice Admiral Robert Murrett expressed concerns about potential delays. The Navy’s primary logistics hub, NSA Bahrain, is crucial for operations in the Gulf region. Admiral Daryl Caudle admitted that it would take considerable effort to resume functions at the site.

The damage has strategic implications, potentially requiring supply hubs to move across greater distances, affecting military operations. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier was notably affected, having to extend its deployment.

Further Iranian Strikes on U.S. Bases

Other U.S. bases in the region have also faced Iranian attacks. By March, reports indicated damage to at least 11 American bases. The Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE experienced structural damage, while the Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait suffered from destroyed equipment. The Al-Azraq base in Jordan was another target, with missile strikes damaging strategic locations.

Iran’s Provocative Response

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi responded to Cao’s remarks by boasting about the impact on U.S. targets, emphasizing Iran’s strategic intent in the region.

This situation has highlighted the challenges the U.S. faces in maintaining its military presence and effectiveness across the Middle East amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
