Oklahoma State achieved a significant victory over Oregon, ending Oregon’s winning streak with a 39-31 win. This game marked the first notable upset of the season. The victory ended Oklahoma State’s 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents and gave Eric Morris, the first-year head coach, his first win with the program. Additionally, it halted Oregon’s 41-game winning streak against unranked teams.
The win stood out as a remarkable achievement in Stillwater, especially considering Oklahoma State’s challenging previous season, where they finished 1-11. They began this season with a 24-10 loss to Tulsa, making the victory against Oregon even more memorable.
Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker was instrumental in the victory, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 109 yards and another touchdown. This performance marked a significant improvement from his season opener under Morris, who coached him last year at North Texas. Mestemaker’s 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter secured the win for the Cowboys.
“Oregon entered the game as the No. 2 team, heavily favored against an unranked opponent, but left with a blow to their national title aspirations,” said a sports analyst.
The crowd in Stillwater celebrated passionately, storming the field after the upset victory. Despite Oregon’s vulnerability observed in their season opener against Boise State, the outcome was unexpected and a setback for their national ambitions.
Looking ahead, Oregon will play against Portland State at home next Friday, while Oklahoma State will face Murray State next Saturday. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
