1963: Mercy Hospital Fire

The South Side Mercy Hospital experienced an extra-alarm fire on September 13, 1963. Firefighters, nuns, and hospital staff acted swiftly to evacuate 109 patients, saving 29 newborns and their mothers. The blaze destroyed the roof and fourth floor but surgeries proceeded despite the alarm bells.

1974: Last Day for Chicago Today Newspaper

The Chicago Today newspaper concluded its publication on September 13, 1974. More than 90 staff from the 175 member team were absorbed by the Tribune. One of the photographers, William Decker, fortuitously won a $300,000 lottery the day before the newspaper ceased operations.

1995: Conviction in 1955 Murders

Kenneth Hansen, a stable hand, faced conviction on September 13, 1995, for the murder of three boys in 1955. Robert Peterson and brothers John and Anton Schuessler Jr. were last seen hitchhiking home before their bodies were found in a forest preserve ditch. Hansen’s arrest was linked to broader investigations, including the disappearance of Helen Brach. Hansen passed away in prison in 2007.

1998: Sammy Sosa’s Home Run Feat

Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa matched Mark McGwire’s 62 home runs in a game on September 13, 1998. Sosa eventually hit 66 home runs for the season. However, accusations of steroid use overshadowed achievements of Sosa, McGwire, and Barry Bonds, who later set the record with 73 home runs.

2020: Alec Mills’ No-Hitter

On September 13, 2020, Alec Mills of the Chicago Cubs delivered a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs triumphed 12-0 and Mills etched his name in franchise history with their 16th no-hitter.
