Chicago White Sox Scouting Director Mike Shirley Resigns Amid Allegations

3 weeks ago 0

Mike Shirley, the amateur scouting director for the Chicago White Sox, has stepped down. The resignation was announced on Saturday before the team secured a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Shirley, who led the department for seven years, faced accusations of making inappropriate racial and sexist comments about and in front of coworkers, according to a report by The Athletic.

Sources revealed that Shirley was placed on administrative leave following an anonymous tip-off to the White Sox. The complaint was made regarding his behavior at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, in August, an event attended by scouts and other personnel. The Athletic also mentioned that Shirley allegedly used vulgar language about women and their bodies.

The White Sox maintain a strict policy against commenting on personnel matters, as stated by MLB.com. Shirley had faced a previous internal investigation following another anonymous tip from a former employee. The tip accused him of inappropriate behavior towards scouts from underrepresented groups. The previous investigation concluded with no findings of misconduct.

Appointed as director of amateur scouting in September 2019, Shirley had previously worked as an assistant scouting director and a cross-checker from 2010 to 2018. This year, Shirley’s department focused on selecting top talent in the MLB Draft, where the White Sox held their first top pick since 2019. With a significant draft pool of $20,489,500, the team chose UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, who was later sidelined for the season due to right wrist soreness.
