Trump Endorses Bailey for Governor
Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Darren Bailey in the race for governor of Illinois. This endorsement challenges Bailey’s efforts to distance himself from a president who remains unpopular in the state. Trump’s backing played a role in Bailey’s defeat to Democrat JB Pritzker in the 2022 election.
As Trump left Ireland after a diplomatic and golf trip, he expressed his support. “I’ve already endorsed him. I’m all for Bailey,” Trump stated. He highlighted Bailey’s personal ordeal after losing family members in a helicopter crash.
Bailey’s Campaign Focus
Bailey has focused his campaign on state issues, attempting to appeal to suburban voters, many of whom have turned away from Trump. Despite the endorsement, Bailey said, “Donald Trump has nothing to do with me running for governor.” However, Bailey has not shied away from accepting Trump’s support, attending events linked to the former president.
In a statement after Trump’s endorsement, Bailey said, “I appreciate President Trump’s endorsement of my campaign for governor, but that’s not what this race is about. It’s about the endless ways JB Pritzker has failed Illinois families over the last eight years.”
Pritzker’s Reaction
Democratic Governor JB Pritzker has been running ads showcasing Bailey’s previous admiration for Trump. Bailey once referred to himself as a “proud supporter of President Trump” and recognized Trump’s intelligence.
Pritzker’s spokesperson, Leah Hurwitz, commented that Trump’s endorsement is expected given Bailey’s longstanding support for Trump. Bailey has endorsed Trump’s policies and actions despite negative impacts on Illinois.
Upcoming Visit
Trump plans to visit Illinois for the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Medinah Country Club. It’s unclear if he will campaign for Bailey during this visit in a state where Trump has consistently lost in presidential elections.
