Search Intensifies for Missing Ferry Passengers in Vanuatu

2 weeks ago 0

A search operation is ongoing in the South Pacific following the sinking of a passenger ferry between two islands in Vanuatu, an island nation located east of Australia. The tragedy has resulted in at least one confirmed death and over 30 individuals remain missing, as per a statement from Vanuatu’s Ministry of the Prime Minister shared on Facebook.

Details of the Incident

The ferry, identified as MV Matui, was on its route between the islands of Ambae and Santo when it sank. There were 47 people on board at the time. Search teams have successfully rescued 15 survivors and have recovered one body. Current efforts are focusing on the coastline as the search for the remaining passengers continues.

The search focus has shifted from open waters to Vanuatu’s southeastern coastline. This decision was made under the guidance of Matai Seremaiah, a Parliament member for Luganville, due to the possibility that strong currents may have carried survivors in that direction.

The ministry expressed solidarity with the affected families: “Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones. To the survivors, we pray for your strength and recovery. To the families of those missing and those we have lost, please know that the nation stands with you in this time of grief.”

Challenges Facing Survivors

Retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport, based in Virginia, provided insights into the factors that could impact the chances of survival for missing passengers. Key elements include water temperature, potential injuries, and access to flotation devices or other lifesaving equipment. Davenport noted that as time passes, the likelihood of survival diminishes due to decreased food and water access and the threat of hypothermia.

Investigation and Preventive Measures

The ministry indicated that the disaster may have been caused by neglecting marine warnings concerning strong winds and potentially overloading the vessel. They emphasized the importance of marine safety with a statement: “The safety of life at sea must come first.”

Authorities stress the need for ship owners to maintain seaworthy vessels equipped with required safety devices and reliable communication systems. Strong marine warnings should not be ignored, as doing so puts lives at significant risk. The government is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the causes and prevent future occurrences.

Recent Related Incidents

A previous incident involving another ferry disaster occurred on August 30 near northern Cyprus. The Filo Jet catamaran capsized, resulting in 14 deaths, leaving an additional 14 missing, while 239 individuals were rescued. An investigation is underway to understand what led to the ferry taking on water shortly after departure.
