Gov. Gavin Newsom Defers 2028 Presidential Run If Kamala Harris Enters Race

3 weeks ago 0

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he would refrain from competing for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 if Kamala Harris decided to enter the race. This gesture implies recognition of Harris’ substantial influence within the party. Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper, Newsom stated, “I wouldn’t run if she ran. Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to her. … I wouldn’t do it to you, I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time.”

Newsom underscored the potential conflict of courting California supporters, suggesting a “pure crossover” between their backers if both pursued candidacy. His acknowledgment effectively avoids a potential clash with Harris, both prominent California political figures.

Vice President Harris has not disclosed definitive plans regarding a 2028 presidential bid. Recently, she informed Megan Rapinoe on a podcast that her current focus is on bolstering Democratic efforts in the midterms. Newsom has also hinted at interest in running yet provides leeway by yielding the spotlight to Harris.

Harris has emerged as a favored contender in several 2028 presidential polls, surpassing Newsom by a significant margin. However, the party’s broader confidence in her potential candidacy remains mixed, reflecting concerns over her previous presidential bid in 2024.

Certain California donors have hesitated to endorse Harris, revealing greater enthusiasm for Newsom. Nevertheless, the decision to prioritize South Carolina as the first primary state might benefit Harris if it prompts support from Black voters in the region.

Both leaders have operated contemporaneously without direct electoral competition until now. Newsom reiterated in February that he’d never impeded Harris’ ambitions and speculated that destiny, not rivalry, would guide their futures. This month, Newsom’s activities in South Carolina display typical pre-election maneuvering.

Newsom suggested that simultaneous candidacies would diminish their collective impact, describing the prospect as “a gift from God for everybody else” in a fragmented Democratic primary landscape.

During the interview taped in Montana, Newsom expressed the importance of introspection for potential candidates, emphasizing the alignment with current public sentiment as crucial to deciding to enter the race.
