The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General recently published a report drawing attention to concerning conditions at a Florida detention facility. The report includes images of ‘small metal enclosures’ used at the center, which is colloquially known as Alligator Alcatraz. These enclosures were used to confine immigrants for durations reaching almost two hours.
The facility’s staff referred to these enclosures as ‘calming areas.’ However, investigators determined that their use violated federal standards. They emphasized that the practice failed to meet the accepted ‘standards for humane treatment.’ This finding reflects a broader need for scrutiny and reform in detention practices.
The revelation underscores concerns about the treatment of detainees in immigration facilities. The report calls for immediate attention to ensure adherence to humane practices that align with federal guidelines.
