A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player lost his life, and another player sustained injuries in a stabbing incident early Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island. Police reported that a fellow student from UMass Dartmouth was later arrested and charged with murder.
Details of the Incident
The tragedy occurred after Marvins Antoine, a freshman running back, and other teammates visited a nightclub in Providence following a home game loss to Framingham State. Providence police revealed there was a conflict inside the Mezzo Lounge around midnight, which later moved to the Wendy’s parking lot across the street, culminating in a deadly stabbing.
Antoine, aged 18, was urgently transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he succumbed to stab wounds in the chest. Another player, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, a freshman defensive back, was also hospitalized with head, neck, and arm injuries classified as non-life-threatening by the police.
Arrest and Investigation
During a Saturday afternoon news conference, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced the arrest of a UMass Dartmouth student, Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, aged 19. Arrested on campus, Eze is in the custody of UMass Dartmouth police and will soon be relocated to Rhode Island on murder charges. Eze is not a member of the football team, and investigations are ongoing to determine the events leading to the altercation.
“There was an altercation between a female and some of the victims that were in line,” said Chief Perez. “And then the altercation moved over to the parking lot of the Wendy’s, but we have no indication that they knew each other.”
Utilizing Flock cameras, authorities identified the vehicle Eze used to flee, aiding in his swift apprehension.
Community Reaction
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller extended condolences to Antoine’s family, friends, classmates, and teammates, expressing hopes for Macean’s speedy recovery. Antoine, who graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, was considered an inspiring figure among peers.
Orlando Delgado, a former high school teammate, remembered Antoine as a role model with aspirations for the NFL. Delgado fondly recalled Antoine’s ambition and loyalty, highlighting his positive influence.
“He was a peacemaker. So to hear about a situation like this is very devastating. It’s hurtful. This is a sad situation because he’s not that type of child,” stated Delgado’s mother, Ashania Chambers.
Another former teammate, Xavier Gracia, described Antoine as an older brother figure, lauding his exemplary character.
