Three players from the Dallas Cowboys received fines from the NFL due to penalties incurred during their season-opening defeat to the New York Giants. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku, and running back Javonte Williams faced fines amounting to $33,409.
According to the NFL’s weekly accountability report, Overshown was fined $9,527 for a late hit on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart in the first quarter, with 9:38 remaining. This penalty granted the Giants a 15-yard advantage, contributing to a drive that resulted in a touchdown.
Donovan Ezeiruaku’s fine was $11,941 for a facemask incident with 2:10 left in the fourth quarter. This penalty aided the Giants in maintaining possession, ultimately helping them to a 28-20 victory over the Cowboys.
Javonte Williams also incurred a $11,941 fine for taunting Giants safety Tyler Nubin following a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Williams held the ball toward Nubin after scoring, which led to a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty, impacting the subsequent extra-point attempt. Dallas kicker Brandon Aubrey missed the 48-yard kick, leaving the Cowboys trailing by eight points.
I don’t know why I did it. It’s just out of character. You don’t got to worry about that no more,” Williams said afterward, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater. “The damage is already done. It’s my fault. I’m better than that. I’m a pro.
The game featured a total of 20 penalties, with Dallas committing nine and the Giants committing 11.
