Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels encountered a setback during Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. He was carted off the field at halftime following an injury to his left elbow on the final play of the first half.
During the play, Daniels tried to regain his balance after tripping as he pulled away from the center. He used his left arm for support, resulting in a hyperextension of the elbow. This led to concerns among fans and officials alike, given its resemblance to an injury he suffered in 2025 against the Seattle Seahawks.
This could be a season-defining injury both for Daniels and the Commanders, as it’s similar to a previous injury where he dislocated his elbow during Week 9 of the 2025 season. Back then, an MRI showed no fracture or severe ligament damage, allowing him to avoid surgery and return in Week 14. He aggravated the elbow once more, leading to a shutdown for the final part of that season.
Dr. David Chao, a medical expert known for his tenure as the head physician for the San Diego Chargers, analyzed Daniels’ injury. He noted via a post on social media, “By video, clear left elbow dislocation…Joint comes out easier second time original ligament tear heals ‘looser.’”
Right now, Marcus Mariota steps in as the replacement. Daniels’ current injury and its potential severity place the Commanders’ season in jeopardy, even as it’s only the second week. This situation mirrors the challenges faced previously, necessitating careful management to prevent further setbacks.
The focus remains on Daniels’ recovery and the implications for Washington’s lineup. The team must assess the rehabilitation path and the immediate future.
