Senior forward Gabe Barwiolek took on the responsibility to lead Geneva’s scoring after losing key players from last year’s team. Caleb Kelly and Ben Murphy had contributed 39 goals in the previous season, leaving Barwiolek with the highest return goal tally of six. He understood the need to elevate his game.
“I don’t feel pressure,” Barwiolek stated. “I know I need to have high expectations for myself. I didn’t meet them last year. This is the year.” In his debut season, Geneva’s new coach, Blake Hughes, was impressed with Barwiolek’s performance in the season opener against Waubonsie Valley. Barwiolek scored early in the match and secured a 2-1 victory with a penalty kick in the second half.
“He’s fantastic,” Hughes said. “Coming back from summer training in Spain, he’s ready to be a key player for us.”
Barwiolek’s presence was felt immediately. Just three minutes in, he capitalized on a free kick, showing his readiness. “Seeing the ball land at my feet, I shot it,” Barwiolek shared. “It felt amazing.” Waubonsie’s Yasser Gomez tied the game in the first half. Waubonsie coach Jose Garcia acknowledged Gomez’s consistent effort and proficiency. “He’s our Energizer Bunny with excellent ball control,” Garcia remarked.
Barwiolek secured the win with a penalty in the second half. Hughes expects consistent performances from Barwiolek due to his skills and game acumen. “He’s technically savvy and can read game pressure,” Hughes explained.
Barwiolek’s talent was further refined by his participation in the Soccer Dreams Travel Pro Tour in Spain. “Training internationally was an incredible experience,” he shared. His experience abroad has been influential in his current gameplay.
The opener reflected Hughes’ expectations, especially with the team heavily relying on younger players. “To have a great season, we need Barwiolek to lead in goals,” Hughes said.
