Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman exited Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds with an injury after getting hit in the face by a foul ball. The incident happened during the fourth inning at Great American Ball Park.
While waiting in the on-deck circle, Bregman was struck by a foul ball that teammate Michael Busch hit into the dirt. The ball rebounded and hit Bregman on the left side of his face. He immediately ran towards the visitors’ dugout, visibly in pain, holding his face. Medical staff quickly escorted him to the clubhouse. Matt Shaw substituted for Bregman at third base.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that the ball impacted Bregman’s left cheekbone, resulting in a laceration under his eye, a nosebleed, and swelling. Bregman was taken to a local Cincinnati hospital for CT scans and X-rays to assess potential fractures in his orbital and cheek area.
Thanks for the messages y’all. I’ll be back.
Later, Bregman shared an update on Instagram, showing his swollen left eye and a plugged nose. Despite the injury, medical staff cleared him to travel back to Chicago with the team Sunday night.
Bregman’s potential extended absence might affect the Cubs during their pursuit of a National League Wild Card spot, with the regular season nearing its end. If Bregman requires time on the injured list, the team will need to depend on Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramirez at third base.
This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of baseball injuries, recalling incidents like the injury sustained by Rays reliever Hunter Bigge last summer and Cleveland’s David Fry suffering facial fractures from a fastball bunt attempt.
The Cubs have a day off on Monday before hosting the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
