By September 22, 2026, Mita and Hemant Parikh, a couple from Suwanee, Georgia, safely returned home after narrowly escaping a devastating flash flood while on a spiritual pilgrimage in the Himalayan region of Tibet.
The couple was part of a larger group consisting of 47 individuals on a spiritual journey to Mount Kailash—an esteemed holy site in Hinduism. Tragically, the flood claimed their fellow travelers, leaving all missing families and seven guides unaccounted for. The organizing tour company confirmed that none of the missing have been located.
Mita and Hemant had planned the pilgrimage for 15 years, believing it was not merely a choice but a divine selection. The journey promised peace, meditation, and surrender to faith at Mount Kailash. They connected with families from around the world, forming friendships over shared meals, prayers, and travel plans.
Their unexpected decision to visit Lhasa and Everest Base Camp, a deviation from their scheduled itinerary, saved them. Despite their usual reluctance to change plans, this time they agreed, drawn by the allure of witnessing Mount Everest.
While admiring Everest, they remained unaware of the impending danger. The news of an approaching flood initially seemed harmless to Hemant. It wasn’t until they investigated further that the gravity of the situation sank in. Their group’s location was obliterated; the hotel where they were supposed to reunite was demolished with no trace remaining.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Hemant is troubled by lingering uncertainty, questioning if he could have done something to aid those they left behind. Mita feels compelled to find purpose in their survival, questioning why they were spared.
The experience reshaped their outlook on life upon returning to Atlanta. Mita is determined to forge deeper connections with others, attributing her survival to having a higher purpose.
As the thought of their spontaneous decision troubles Mita, she ponders why they were chosen to return safely. Her sentiment echoes, “Why? Why did God choose us to live?” The answers elude them, but the quest for purpose endures.
