FAA Outage Causes Widespread Flight Disruptions in Northeast U.S.

1 week ago 0

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) experienced a significant technology failure on Monday at an air traffic control facility, resulting in extensive flight delays, cancellations, and diversions across the Northeast U.S. The situation disrupted operations for all airlines in the region, including United Airlines at Newark Liberty International Airport.

A spokesperson from the FAA informed Newsweek that flights intended for Newark Liberty were either held at their departure points or redirected to other airports. The FAA has issued a travel waiver to offer passengers flexibility in managing their travel plans. The implementation of this waiver aims to mitigate inconvenience while efforts are underway to resolve the technology outage.

Extent of the Impact

The failure affected communications at the Philadelphia TRACON facility. As a result, ground stops were initiated at several key airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Teterboro Airport. Delays soon extended to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, showcasing the widespread nature of the problem.

The Transportation Secretary stated, “We have solutions, need resources and let’s fix it.”

Specific Airport Impacts

Newark Liberty International Airport

  • 282 flights canceled
  • 208 flights delayed

International flights from several countries, including Iceland, France, Spain, Greece, and Egypt, were affected.

Philadelphia International Airport

Directly impacted due to issues at Philadelphia TRACON:

  • 124 flights canceled
  • 395 flights delayed

Teterboro Airport

Here, flights were stopped and delays persisted for hours.

JFK and LaGuardia Airports

Temporary ground stops and delays occurred as congestion grew.

Resolution Efforts

The root cause was identified as issues with radio frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford revealed that both the primary circuit and backup line failed due to a fiber connection issue between New Brunswick and Newark. The repair involves installing a replacement circuit, a process expected to take several hours.

Operations at JFK and LaGuardia airports were gradually returning to normal, but Newark, Philadelphia, and Teterboro faced continued restrictions during ongoing repair efforts. Passengers are advised to check with airlines for the latest flight information, as delays might persist even after technical problems are resolved due to aircraft diversions and scheduling challenges.
