The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes payments to over 70 million American recipients, including retirement, spousal, survivor, and disability benefits. Due to the large number of beneficiaries, payments are staggered throughout the month based on the type of benefit received, duration of claiming, and often the recipient’s birthday.
As of July this year, the average Social Security retirement payment stands at $2,031.74, while Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients receive approximately $736.54. The schedule for Social Security payments in October 2026 is as follows:
- October 1: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit payments.
- October 2: Social Security payments for those who began benefits before May 1997, or those receiving both Social Security and SSI.
- October 14: Payments for birthdays between the 1st and 10th.
- October 21: Payments for birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- October 28: Payments for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
Additionally, SSI beneficiaries will experience a unique situation in October. Typically, SSI payments are issued on the first of each month. In October, however, due to November 1 landing on a Sunday, the November payment will be sent on October 30. This adjustment prevents financial delays, according to a SSA blog post.
Recipients should note that this adjustment does not qualify as duplicate payment, and no report to the SSA is necessary. On October 14, 2026, Social Security recipients will be informed about their annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027.
COLA aims to maintain purchasing power amidst rising prices and applies to various Social Security benefits, including retirement, survivor, and disability payments, along with SSI. The adjustment is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The 2026 COLA was 2.8 percent.
Based on forecasts, beneficiaries might see an increase of 3.4 to 3.6 percent for 2027. The Senior Citizens League estimates a 3.5 percent COLA, whereas AARP suggests a 3.6 percent increase, potentially improving the average retired worker’s benefit by about $75 monthly. The final COLA figure depends on September’s inflation data.
The official 2027 COLA will be declared on October 14, 2026, following the BLS’s release of September inflation figures. This data, available at 8:30 a.m. ET, completes the COLA calculation. The new adjustment will apply to Social Security payments starting January 2027.
