Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Controversy at Philadelphia Concert

7 days ago 0

PHILADELPHIA — Ed Sheeran started a recent concert by addressing issues surrounding Gaza amid controversies affecting his tour. The situation intensified after supporting acts withdrew in support of Macklemore, who was removed for making pro-Palestinian remarks on stage.

During his performance at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran expressed a desire for his music and concerts to focus on unity and humanity. He expressed his views on the conflict, describing events in Israel and Gaza as horrific and catastrophic.

“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” Sheeran said, addressing the audience.

Controversy erupted when Macklemore, Sheeran’s original U.S. opening act, was removed for his remarks during a show in New Jersey. Sheeran stated he wasn’t responsible for the decision, which came after pressure from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose company owns a venue scheduled for Sheeran’s tour. After Sheeran commented on Tuesday, his supporting acts withdrew from the tour.

While Sheeran’s Loop Tour usually involved solo performances, the Irish folk band Beoga occasionally joined him. Macklemore was replaced by bands Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe, who also withdrew, followed by Finneas, set to tour with Sheeran in South America.

Ahead of Saturday’s show, a small group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the stadium. Hillary Steinberg, a disappointed fan, attended the protest instead of the concert, stating, “I think all art is political, and all music is political, and so this choice is a political choice.” Another fan, Diane Savitz, attended the concert, believing that music should unite people, not engage in politics.

Macklemore has since pledged $1 million to Palestinian relief efforts, prompting Kraft to match the donation. A spokesperson confirmed Sheeran and Kraft agreed to donate $2 million each, though their donation targets remain unspecified.

Despite controversies, Sheeran’s Loop Tour is the highest-grossing tour globally, with an average city revenue of over $7 million. Through 2025, he ranks as the third top-earning concert act since 2021. Sheeran asserts that the tour promoter, not him, decided to dismiss Macklemore. He shared efforts to reconcile differences before the removal.

Experts note that while promoters and venues hold significant sway over concert tours, artists of Sheeran’s stature typically have final control over show-related decisions. Addressing the Philadelphia crowd, Sheeran emphasized that his concerts are for everyone, inviting divergent views while promoting themes of love, hope, and unity. He expressed concerns about venues needing to preapprove performances.

“This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world,” he told fans.
