Child Star Justin Cooper Shares Challenges of Growing Up Famous

4 days ago 0

Justin Cooper gained fame at a young age, starring alongside Jim Carrey in the 1997 film “Liar Liar.” Cooper recently discussed the challenges of growing up in the spotlight during his appearance on the “Not So Little Rascals” podcast.

Cooper revealed that his mother played a crucial role in protecting him from the negative aspects of fame. Despite her efforts, he still encountered uncomfortable situations, such as receiving fan mail from people in prison who considered him a “cute kid.” He shared these experiences with podcast hosts Jordan Warkol and Blake Collins.

“My mom did a really good job protecting me, but there were still scary times,” Cooper explained.

In “Liar Liar,” Cooper worked with Jim Carrey, who played a lawyer who couldn’t lie for 24 hours. Cooper praised his mother for ensuring his safety on film sets and described how she never left him alone with anyone during his career.

“There are acting parents who just let their kids do whatever they were told,” Cooper stated. “My mom wasn’t like that. Almost to a fault.”

Cooper recounted a story involving comedian Don Rickles, known for his upfront comedy style. Rickles played Mr. Wilson in “Dennis the Menace Strikes Again,” and Cooper’s mother approached him to ask that he avoid using foul language while Cooper was present.

Reflecting on his time in Hollywood, Cooper shared his experiences on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” alongside other stars like Melissa Joan Hart. He later decided to leave the entertainment industry when auditions felt more like chores than opportunities.

“Auditions started to feel like work,” Cooper admitted. “I wanted to hang out with friends and do normal kid stuff, like spend time on AIM.”

Discussing with his mother, Cooper felt she might be disappointed in his decision to step away given her involvement in his career. He remembered his relationship with her became strained during high school when she discovered he was smoking marijuana, which led to tensions between them.

“Most of the time my relationship with my mom was great,” Cooper recalled. “During high school, it got a little strange.” His mother had supported him wholeheartedly during his acting years, taking him to auditions and helping with performances.
