A suspect is in custody following the shooting death of D’aJ Flowers, a Chicago city employee found fatally wounded in her home earlier this year. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued on August 26 for 33-year-old Darreon Plummer. He is accused of killing Flowers, 36, on February 6 in the residence they shared on North Bell Avenue in the West Ridge community, according to officials. Plummer was Flowers’ boyfriend, according to her family. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed she died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Flowers’ brother, Demone Flowers, reported that police informed the family of the arrest. Plummer is currently in custody in Washington state, north of Seattle. A Chicago police representative could not confirm these details but mentioned the investigation is ongoing. However, records indicate Plummer is detained by the Snohomish County, Washington sheriff’s office, with his booking recorded on September 1.
According to Snohomish County Court records, Plummer appeared before a judge on September 2 for a warrant identification hearing, signing a waiver of extradition the same day. As of Tuesday morning, Plummer remains in Washington State, with no clear date for his return to Chicago.
My sister was never a violent, malicious person. She never got into violent situations with anyone. She was always loving and caring, evidenced by her job as a dispatcher, helping people.– Demone Flowers
D’aJ Flowers previously worked in the Freedom of Information Act division of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, handling its subpoena unit. She was also a senior administrative assistant. Mary May, an OEMC spokeswoman, noted Flowers’ previous role with the Chicago Department of Public Health and her pursuit of a promotion at the time of her death.
Flowers’ passing follows the death of her mother, Surbezz Clark, 53, who was shot in July outside a gas station in Auburn Gresham on Chicago’s South Side. During that incident, one other person was killed and two were injured; no arrests have been made.
Demone Flowers expressed how their family has grown closer through these tragedies, finding motivation in remembering D’aJ’s dedication to helping others. He keeps her memory alive through daily conversations with her photos.
